Supply and logistics for the Van Gogh Field Development will be managed by Apache’s office in Perth. Apache will use various Exmouth businesses, particularly in machinery and engineering, accommodation during cyclone evacuations, air transportation and helicopter services, crane hire, logistics and transport companies, marine service and boat hire for day-to-day operations of the FPSO.
Apache has established a logistics base in Exmouth to support the FPSO. The base will be managed by a local company who, from time-to-time, will require additional support and services from within the town. All goods for the FPSO will be purchased in Perth and taken to Exmouth once a week by Apache’s road transport contractor, Toll Logistics.
Once the FPSO arrives in the field in late 2009, a fortnightly boat service, sourced from Exmouth, will be required to transport food and consumables to the facility.
Apache, in conjunction with BHP Billiton Petroleum, has established the Exmouth Aviation Consortium to manage the air transportation requirements of the offshore oil operations. Helicopter operations will occur out of the old Learmonth airport terminal. Already, many people are using the facility and local people have been employed to service the centre. Bristow manages Exmouth Aviation Services, including the airport and heliport, and contracts ground staff as well as pilots, mechanics and support staff.
Because of the increased air traffic through Exmouth brought about by the offshore oil and gas industry activity, there is now an additional daily Skywest public transport flight into and out of Exmouth on weekdays. This has lead to the employment of more people (airport and heliport staff, engineers, pilots, etc) and additional business for local car hire firms, shuttle bus services and so forth.
